Inspiring Civic Engagement Nationally at AAC&U

The new year has started strong. Last month, Project Pericles held two compelling sessions at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Annual Meeting, making it 18 years in a row that Project Pericles has presented at this prestigious venue.
Jan Risë Liss, Executive Director moderated a panel featuring the exceptional work of  Periclean Faculty Leaders (PFLs) from five institutions:
“Connecting Classrooms, Campuses, and Communities: Curricula and Pedagogical Strategies for the Public Good” on Thursday, January 18, 2024Bates College, Seulgie Lim, Assistant Professor of Politics; Arthur Vining Davis PFL in STEM and Social Sciences
Skidmore College, Sarah DiPasquale, Associate Professor and Department Chair, Dance; Mellon PFL in the Humanities
Swarthmore College, Lei Ouyang, Associate Professor and Department Chair, Music; Mellon PFL in the Humanities
Ursinus College, John Spencer, Associate Professor of Education and Department Chair, Education; Mellon PFL in the Humanities
Wagner College, John Esser, Professor of Sociology, Arthur Vining Davis PFL in STEM and Social Sciences
Panelists highlighted innovative curricula co-created with community organizations that empower students to address society’s grand challenges. They discussed empowering African immigrant women communities in Maine, developing a dance residency for elementary school students in New York, facilitating social change through Asian American oral histories in Philadelphia, advancing educational equity with Pennsylvania school district staff, and transforming a first-year composition course to support grant writing and social science data collection in Staten Island. I am pleased to share that we presented to a packed room and our work was well-received. The Periclean Faculty Leadership (PFL) Program™ is supported by the Mellon Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, and The Eugene M. Lang Foundation.Additionally on Friday, January 19, Project Pericles Associate Director, Arielle del Rosario, hosted a breakfast roundtable, “Fulfilling the Promise to Educate for Democracy: The Evolving Role of National Organizations.” This dynamic roundtable featuring the work of Project Pericles Civic Engagement Resources was also facilitated by Lauren Schueler from Campus Vote Project and Britah Odondi from Scholars Strategy Network.
