Project Pericles Releases 2026-2028 Strategic Plan: “Shaping Civic Futures”
Project Pericles has unveiled Shaping Civic Futures, our 2026–2028 Strategic Plan to reimagine higher education’s role in strengthening democracy. Through three priorities (Pedagogical Influence, Consortium Strength, and Thought Leadership) we aim to renew civic learning as a defining feature of American higher education and ensure civic agency and engagement become defining outcomes for every student.

The June Periclean (2025)
The June 2025 Periclean spotlights Civic Engagement Fellow Aaron Lawler’s student-driven activism, Dr. Dorcas McCoy’s path to Full Professorship, and Pace University’s Spring Research Conference on higher ed’s public purpose. Highlights also include takeaways from the May Community Conversation and the announcement of fifteen new Periclean Faculty Leadership and Course Enhancement awardees.
Alumni Spotlight: Where Are They Now? Dr. Dorcas McCoy Champions Civic Inquiry at Bethune-Cookman University
Dr. Dorcas McCoy, Periclean Faculty Leader and Civic Engagement Fellow at Bethune-Cookman University, shares how Project Pericles helped to transform her pedagogy and propel her to Full Professorship. Through experiential learning, such as voter suppression forums, legislative visits, and community partnerships, she equips students to connect theory to practice, fostering inquiry, empowerment, and civic leadership beyond the classroom.
Thinking Critically and Acting Courageously at Waubonsee Community College
At Waubonsee Community College, Periclean Civic Engagement Fellow Aaron Lawler integrates civic engagement into humanities courses, guiding students to register, vote, and reflect on democracy. Through letter-writing, advocacy against book bans, and critical discussions on sustainability, students connected classroom learning to real-life action, discovering their power as active participants in civic life.
Raised Beds Raise Hopes at Widener University
At Widener University, Professors Bruce Grant and Ruth Cary’s interdisciplinary course Raised Beds, Raise Hopes combines biology, ecology, and writing with hands-on mentoring in a local elementary school garden. Supported by a Periclean Faculty Leader Course Enhancement Grant, the program fosters food justice, sustainability, and community, inspiring students to see education as civic action.
Exploring Food Justice Through Action and Literature
Professor Summer Harrison’s Food Justice and U.S. Literature course at Drew University, supported by a Periclean Faculty Leadership grant, partnered with local organizations to address food insecurity. Students connected literature with hands-on community work, fostering collaborations, strengthening local networks, and developing justice-centered approaches to civic engagement that will shape sustainable partnerships.
The May Periclean (2025)
The May 2025 Periclean features Arielle del Rosario’s reflection on pluralism, Wagner College’s Hostile Terrain 94 Conversations exhibit, and a partner spotlight on the Center for Artistic Activism. Highlights also include Swarthmore’s Engaged Scholarship Symposium and updates from Elon’s Periclean Scholars.
